Paddling

This seminar provides an overview of human-powered paddle craft. The objectives of the seminar are to provide the participant with enough information to decide what type of paddle craft to choose, to learn what safety equipment is recommended, and to understand the basic, entry-level strokes. The seminar’s presentation format is an interactive discussion. The number of slides is intentionally lower for the two-hour seminar to allow time for discussion with and interaction among the participants.

Introduction to Navigation

Do you want to learn practical techniques to plan, navigate, and check your progress on the water? It's not that hard, and modern marine electronics like GPS and Chartplotters make it even easier.

This seminar will introduce you to using nautical charts to determine safe routes, creating waypoints in your Chartplotter and other GPS devices, and basic electronic navigation and planning using the free downloadable OpenCPN software. This seminar is a great foundation for advanced courses that teach piloting and celestial navigation skills.

Boating on Locks, Lakes, and Rivers

The United States has over 30,000 miles of improved waterways—some of the finest boating to be found anywhere. This seminar introduces boaters to this inland cruising world.

​

The seminar deals with such varied topics as special navigation rules for rivers, the Western Rivers System of buoys and marks, river currents, “reading” a river, jetties and wing dams, the intricacies of locking through, and communicating with lock masters and bridge tenders.

CHARTING

Whether you're planning a cruise, going fishing, or traveling to a local marina, knowing how to read and use nautical charts is essential to safe boating.  Charts include must-have information, including bottom contours, hazards, and aids to navigation, to help you travel safely. Each student will use educational paper charts with plotters and dividers to build skills. With this information you will have a better understanding when using electronic charts.

Practical Marine Electrical Maintenance

The Practical Marine Electrical Maintenance stresses the diagnosis of modern systems, while also teaching the basics of boat electrical systems.

​

The course covers those repairs that do-it-yourselfers can still perform, teaches how to diagnose problems that might be beyond your ability to fix, and how to share information with your mechanic so the right repairs get performed.

 

The last chapter discusses solutions to problems that could occur while afloat and away from a repair facility.

Practical Marine Engine Maintenance

​The Practical Marine Engine Maintenance stresses the diagnosis of modern systems, while also teaching the basics of engine layout and operation.

 

Gasoline inboards, outboards, and diesel engines are taught in a way that reinforces the common aspects of how engines work.

​

Modern engines offer high reliability and good performance through the use of computerized systems for fuel delivery and engine timing. Most of these systems are “black boxes” that can no longer be serviced by weekend mechanics with ordinary tools.

 

The course covers those repairs that do-it-yourselfers can still perform, teaches how to diagnose problems that might be beyond your ability to fix, and how to share information with your mechanic so the right repairs get performed. It also covers basic mechanical systems such as drive systems (propellers), steering systems, and engine controls.
